Frescobaldi

Marchesi de’ Frescobaldi traces its roots back more than 700 years to medieval Florence, where the family first began cultivating vineyards in the early 1300s at their Tenuta di Castiglioni estate in Val di Pesa. Over centuries, the Frescobaldi family became influential bankers and patrons of the arts—financing English monarchs like Henry VIII and serving Renaissance artists such as Donatello and Brunelleschi. By the 15th and 16th centuries, their wine was being served at the Papal Court and English Court, solidifying their reputation for excellence.

Marchesi de’ Frescobaldi: Seven Centuries of Tuscan Wine Legacy

In 1855, Marchese Vittorio degli Albizzi Frescobaldi introduced international grape varieties like Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot to Tuscany—transforming the region’s viticultural potential. In the late 19th century, the family built Italy’s first gravity-fed cellar at Pomino in 1894, streamlining winemaking and preserving grape integrity. Today, Frescobaldi owns and operates eleven estates across Tuscany, including Castello di Nipozzano, Castello di Pomino, Tenuta CastelGiocondo, and Tenuta della Ammiraglia, each expressing the region’s terroir diversity.

Under current leadership, Lamberto Frescobaldi serves as Vice President and Director of Production, guiding winemaking across diverse estates while maintaining continuity with tradition. Frescobaldi emphasizes the unique character of each estate through their motto, “Cultivating Toscana Diversity,” ensuring terroir-driven wine styles across their portfolio. Sustainability is a core value: all estates have earned AgriQualità certification since 2012 and deploy solar panels, wood-based pyrolysis energy, and lighter-weight bottles to reduce their environmental impact.

A noteworthy project is their partnership with Gorgona, an agricultural penal colony on a Tuscan island, where inmates cultivate vineyards and produce limited-edition wines that support rehabilitation efforts. Frescobaldi also fosters contemporary culture through “Artisti per Frescobaldi,” an initiative pairing emerging artists with their estates to create site-specific artworks and annual prizes.

Each estate produces wines suited to its terroir—from Brunello di Montalcino at CastelGiocondo to Superior Chianti Classico at Perano, and even Bordeaux-style wines at Ornellaia and Mormoreto. Their wines have received high praise from global wine critics, regularly scoring above 90 points and featuring frequently among the top global wine lists. Frescobaldi also produces Laudemio extra-virgin olive oil, blending their vinicultural heritage with quality gastronomic tradition.

With a legacy that intertwines Florence’s political, economic, and cultural history, Frescobaldi remains a symbol of Tuscan excellence. They balance deep-rooted tradition with innovation—architectural, agricultural, cultural, and viticultural—creating a wine dynasty respected around the world.
