Cantine San Marzano

Cantine San Marzano was founded in 1962 by 19 dedicated grapegrowers from San Marzano di San Giuseppe, uniting to elevate the region’s wines. Today, the cooperative includes around 1,200 members managing some 1,500 hectares of vineyards in the heart of Primitivo di Manduria DOP.

Cantine San Marzano: A Puglian Powerhouse

Under Francesco Cavallo’s presidency since 1982, the winery transitioned from bulk sales to bottling in 1996, boosting quality and brand identity. Located just ten miles inland from the Gulf of Taranto, the vineyards lie on iron-rich red soils with limestone subsoil—ideal for Primitivo and Negroamaro. A flagship vineyard, Valle del Sessantanni, spans 40 ha of bush vines over 60 years old, inspiring the iconic “Sessantanni” Primitivo di Manduria. That expression, aged 12 months in French and American oak, regularly garners acclaim—including Tre Bicchieri awards.

The cooperative emphasizes tradition blended with modernity and sustainability, vetting grapes meticulously before vinification in a facility housing 3,000 barriques. Their diverse portfolio includes crisp whites like Edda Bianco, rosé Tramari, and a range of Primitivo and Negroamaro reds. In 2020, the estate was named “Cooperative Winery of the Year” by Gambero Rosso, celebrating its cultural and social impact on the region. Cantine San Marzano also launched Masseria Samia—a 120-ha experimental estate—dedicated to research on ancient grape varieties and sustainable viticulture. Here, climate sensors inform precision farming, while Mediterranean plants create a “green lung” ecosystem.

Their winemaking team, led by young oenologists Caterina Bellanova and Davide Ragusa, continues to innovate while honoring the region's traditions. Cantine San Marzano bottles around 20 million wines annually under 28 labels, distributing to 70 countries and earning Michelin-star chef endorsements. The winery's state-of-the-art facility in San Marzano di San Giuseppe boasts advanced bottling, labeling, and barrel technologies, along with ISO 9000 and 14000 certifications.

With open hospitality—even on Sundays—their staff, including President Cavallo, personally greet visitors, showcasing genuine Puglian warmth. Cantine San Marzano stands today as a benchmark for quality, sustainability, and innovation, embodying the soul of southern Italy’s winemaking renaissance.
