Cantina Jermann

Cantina Jermann, founded in 1881 by Anton Jermann—a migrant from Austria—is located in Friuli‐Venezia Giulia, in northeastern Italy. The estate spans around 170ha of vineyards and an additional 200ha dedicated to crops, showcasing its deep agricultural roots. In the early 1970s, Silvio Jermann—educated at the top Italian enology schools—revolutionized the winery with the creation of Vintage Tunina, an innovative white blend released in 1975. This field blend of Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Malvasia Istriana, Ribolla Gialla, and Picolit skyrocketed to cult status and was named one of the best Italian white wines in the world.

Cantina Jermann: Friuli’s Visionary Winery

Ahead of its time, Jermann adopted Stelvin screwcaps in the late 1990s, notably preserving freshness in the 1997 Vintage Tunina. In 2007, a modern, sustainable winery in Ruttars was inaugurated, achieving CasaClimaWine certification for environmental efficiency. The vineyards benefit from a unique "Ponca" soil rich in marl and sandstone, with a climate moderated by the Adriatic and Alpine.

Jermann’s commitment to sustainability is unwavering: organic practices, no chemical residues, and biodiversity with cover cropping protect 75–130 species in the ecosystem. The estate produces a diverse portfolio, including the iconic Where Dreams Have No End Chardonnay, Capo Martino, and distinctive varietals like Pinot Grigio, Sauvignon, and Pinot Nero. A lesser-known gem is their Dreams Chardonnay, named after a U2 lyric, demonstrating their bold creativity.

In March 2021, the Antinori family acquired a majority of Jermann while ensuring Silvio Jermann retained influence to preserve the estate’s style and values. Despite the transition, core philosophies—cleanliness, organic farming, precise vineyard care—remain central to operations . Today, Jermann produces around 800,000 to 900,000 bottles annually, maintaining exceptional quality with minimal intervention.

With their commitment to innovation, ecological respect, and unmistakable craftsmanship, Cantina Jermann continues to stand as Friuli’s jewel—a benchmark for Italian white wine excellence and sustainability.
