Poderi Aldo Conterno, founded in 1969 by Aldo Conterno, stands proudly in the Bussia cru of Monforte d’Alba, nestled within Piedmont's legendary Barolo region. A descendant of a long line of winemakers and formerly part of the historic Giacomo Conterno estate, Aldo forged his own path in pursuit of excellence.
Poderi Aldo Conterno: Barolo’s Harmonious Balance of Tradition and Innovation
Aldo Conterno's winemaking philosophy blended tradition with thoughtful innovation: he prized long aging in large Slavonian oak casks, yet adopted shorter maceration times and resisted the use of new barriques, aiming to preserve the pure Nebbiolo expression. This “enlightened traditionalism” yielded wines that are powerfully structured yet fruit-driven, embodying both sophistication and depth.
The estate spans approximately 25 hectares in Bussia Soprana, where three famed single-vineyard sites—Romirasco, Cicala, and Colonnello—draw from southern and southwestern slopes with calcareous clay-marl soils. Each vineyard expresses a distinct personality: Romirasco offers mineral-rich power, Cicala delivers masculine structure and acidity, and Colonnello brings floral elegance with softer tannins.
Aldo’s legacy includes extraordinary labels: GranBussia, a riserva crafted only in exceptional years from all three cru vineyards, spends years aging before release and achieves legendary status among Barolo collectors. Alongside GranBussia are the expressive single-vineyard Barolos—Romirasco, Cicala, and Colonnello—as well as elegant Barbera d'Alba, Langhe Nebbiolo ("Il Favot"), and even Chardonnay and Freisa-based wines that showcase the estate’s versatility.
Today, Aldo’s three sons—Franco, Stefano, and Giacomo—carry forward the family’s philosophy, embracing organic viticulture and modern precision while honoring their father’s vision. These wines continue to earn global acclaim, balancing power and finesse across vintages that speak to Barolo’s enduring elegance and the unique terroir of Bussia.
